Apr 16, Crystal rated it liked it · review of another edition Shelves: april-tbr A good read with interesting characters. Famed for being the town where "the Movie" Stranger in Paradise was shot, we follow a young runaway coming to the town from the outside looking in. She arrives on the day of Sam Riley's daughter's wedding to a man much older.
Secrets and lies are exposed and the truth is brought to light under the sunny skies of California. Apr 28, Myra Blake rated it really liked it · review of another edition Shelves: read-in This is a really good book. It is a story of family and the many facets of the relationships among the various members. It primarily focuses on the different aspects of the lives of three women - a mother and her two grown daughters.
There is romance and intrigue intermingled into the story, as well. I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book in this trilogy. Jul 17, Laura rated it liked it · review of another edition. Took a while to get into this book but I did enjoy it.

Somewhere along the way I had picked up this book in paperback, but I put off reading it because it was part of a trillogy. And then while browsing for a library brok I found that the others were available including this as an ebook. So since I couldn't find the paperbook I read the digital copy.
I had read one other book by this author years ago, 'Woman in Red' which I enjoyed, so I'm not sure why I never picked up other by Goudge. I guess my other favorite authors kept me busy enough. While th Somewhere along the way I had picked up this book in paperback, but I put off reading it because it was part of a trillogy. While there is a romantic element to this book I wouldn't call it a romance per se, I would compare it more to the best books by Jon Hassler about the lives lived in a particular small town and how they intermingle.
This one centers on the women of the Delarosa family, beginning with the wedding of the youngest Delarosa daughter Alice to a man old enough to be her father, and then the tangle that arises when Ian Carpenter, the son of her new husband and just a few years her senior, begins a relationship with her widowed mother Samantha Sam Riley.
Sam married young and regretfully found out her husband was more of an irresponsible child than either of her daughters the other being Laura. Sam had to work hard to keep her family solvent when her husband would chase after every hare-brained scheme that came his way. When he died of cancer she found the depth of his debts were far worse than she'd known. She shielded her daughters from the truth about their father and they adored him, particularly as he was often more of a playmate than parent.
Ian is drawn to Sam precisely because she is grounded and authentic as a woman. He has complexities that Sam seems to understand, even while not knowing or even probing for what underlies them. When peri-menopausal Sam finds herself pregnant it is more than a shock to them both. The stress of it threatens their new relationship. The pregnancy threatens her relationship to her daughters too.
Alice is hypocritically appalled by the difference in their ages, and that her Mom would dishonor her father in this way. But it is the relationship with Laura that suffers the most.
Laura and Sam have worked together side by side in Sam's business since Laura was divorced. It's the reason behind Laura's divorce that proves to be the greatest thorn. Her husband left her when he found she couldn't provide him with a child, so when her mother becomes pregnant it becomes a living nightmare for Laura who so desperately wanted to become a mother. Even though Laura is becoming a mother to a young runaway who calls herself Finch and showed up at Alice's wedding, seeing her mother's body getting round is becoming too difficult to handle.
When it becomes clear that Laura intends to leave the family business, Sam decides there is a better course of action. The one element of the story that seems out of place is the story line of a serial killer in the community. The ending of the novel connects it to the main characters but it does feel just a bit forced. Everything works out well in the end for a happily ever-after but it's the transformation that Sam makes in her life that kept this reader turning pages.

Dec 29, Donna Zigmont rated it really liked it. I really liked this book. I've read several of Eileen's books and have enjoyed them all. I didn't have a favorite character, but I'd have to say I liked Finch a lot.
I was happy to see her get a chance to have a normal life. I liked and disliked Laura. I thought her willingness to feed, clothe and house a total stranger very admirable. But her bitterness at her Mother's pregnancy was annoying. I didn't like Alice at all. I felt her a spoiled bitch. I didn't really like Sam either. I understand h I really liked this book. I understand having a fling, but they make condoms for a reason.
Sep 21, Julie Barrett rated it it was amazing. Smaatha's daughter Alice had just married West Carpenter-he's only a few years older than herself, 50's. Her sister is Audrey and she's at the wedding festivities also. Very detailed descriptions of the countryside, flowers, orchards, etc.
Very lush ground. Love the little shops throughout the town, as Sam walks by and remembers her past first part of the trilogy: Stranger in Paradise, This book is about Samatha and her life, her new boyfriend, her daughters: Alice and Laura, and other relatives. Love the little shops throughout the town, as Sam walks by and remembers her past life. Pleasantly surprised with the lovemaking in this book. Laura has taken in Flinch and is in no rush to get rid of her, She helps out at the farm.
Alice is back and she and Laura go to their mothers house and ask why is she dating a man young enough to be her son. They have a discussion and move on.. It's only been a few years since her husband has been dead. Ian Carpenter makes Sam feel youthful again, more energy and she loves how he is with her, just the things he does. With her age of 50 and no periods for a while she doesn't think they need protection.. This book is also about Flinch, it first starts out with her journey from the east coast to the west coast and how she settled in Carson Springs.
All of their lifes are webbed together in this town where everybody cares for one another. Love hearing of the nuns and their daily life and how they are able to earn money. Proverbs about flowers and spices are a nice touch. Always love to learn new things. Love the romance, the mystery and the travel, new places for me and the very detailed descriptions of the houses, furnishings, gardens, trees, layout of the town-the stores there and the people. Sam travels to spend the weekend with Ian in New York as he oversees a mural being put up.
She finally tells him of her secret and he needs a bit of time to digest it all Story goes on as we follow people's personal and work lifes and it's easy to keep the characters straight. Nice mix of narrative and dialog. Besides a murderer on the loose there are illnesses, pregnancies and economy issues to deal with. Love how it all come together in the end, everything has been ironed out Sep 06, Stasha rated it really liked it. Sam Riley, a widowed mother of two grown daughters, was looking forward to a humdrum existence.
But little did she know that life had quite a bundle of surprises in store for her. Never in her wildest dreams would she ever have predicted that at 48, she would be pregnant, much less by her new son-in-law's son!
The news of their romance and the impending birth of their child spreads like wildfire in town, to the point wher "Stranger in Paradise" was a really sweet, sentimental story about family. The news of their romance and the impending birth of their child spreads like wildfire in town, to the point where Sam is left wondering if she has made the right choice by being with Ian. So for a time she ends up giving into these doubts, only to realise that she does so because of the perceptions of others, especially those of her grown daughters, Alice and Laura.
The supporting characters added more meaning to the story. Finch, who unexpectedly walks into Laura's life and almost overnight becomes the child that she has always longed for, and Maude, who lives life on her own terms after falling out with her grown son. The title also gives meaning to Ian Sam's love interest , who was once a stranger in the paradise that Sam has always assumed she had made for herself, particularly in her past life with her husband, being the wife and mother whom everyone expected her to be.
A life that was predictable and safe, just the way everyone saw it to be. I also liked the way that Laura and Hector's relationship evolved, slow to start, but surely growing! I also liked the way the story ended, in which everyone put aside their differences of opinion and came together as they should, as a family.
Sep 05, Norabee rated it liked it · review of another edition Recommends it for: fans of books-in-a-series. The author creates a tight, plot driven character study and I enjoyed it but there were a lot of characters, probably because this is a series and others will have the spotlight in future novels.
This was kind of like a night-time soap-opera, a little Knots Landing, a little modern day Peyton Place The story centers on Samantha Kiley is a 48 year old widow with two grown daughters, one is newly married to an older man.
The other daughter's husband is a big jerk and divorced her because of her inability to have children. All of the stories center on this hometown and the family history that has shaped the residents. This book was interesting and included a murder mystery, a late in life pregnancy and gave insight into May-December romances. Although I know there will be other stories told in this series, I don't think I'll be continuing because while interesting and well paced, there was something about the writing style that just didn't draw me in.
Sep 23, Janice rated it it was ok · review of another edition Shelves: fiction , chick-lit. I selected this book because it is the first in a trilogy; I like getting involved with series characters, and I found the California setting inviting.
The book opens with a New York runaway's travelogue as she travels cross country by bus, with Carson Springs, CA, her destination, merely happenstance. As it turns out, sixteen year old Finch is the only female character with any substance. Sadly, I found the others lacking backbone, integrity and worth. My favorite portion of this novel is the somewhat suspenseful side plot of a serial killer in the neighborhood, and who the killer turns out to be. The main plot is fluff. I had problems with the period in history setting. I found it inconsistent. Overall, the book was lackluster. Dec 07, Kristy rated it liked it Shelves: end-of-the-world-challenge. This story takes place in the fabled town of Carson Springs, CA which is a town I would have loved to visit if it were real.
You are privy to the goings on of a great deal of people, so it makes it interesting. The story mainly focuses on Sam who at the beginning of the book watches her daughter marry a man 28 years older than her, just 6 years older than Sam herself.
Once you get past that, you see that there is something going on between Sam and her new son-in-law's son. It sounds prett This story takes place in the fabled town of Carson Springs, CA which is a town I would have loved to visit if it were real.
It sounds pretty cheesy, but the story line keeps you interested. Everyone is dealing with something in their lives, but for the most part, it's about family dynamics.
really nice to watch.
Best bj artist on PH. period.
Nah that’ll fuck up my makeup.
I’d love to watch another girl fuck my man and then we can both suck his dick!
